I think you were right. I know a lot of people s on the concept of being friends with people you've never met, but that's bullshit. A friend is someone you form an emotional bond with based upon shared experiences/opinions, and a lot of us feel more able to be the real us online. Physical appearance or proximity doesn't come into it.
