Both my mother & stepdad beat me & my siblings senseless. It took me a very long time to separate my love for my parents & to understand the abuse I went through wasn't my fault or wasn't out of love or care.

I have to agree with @HereForTea, I come from an era where smacking was acceptable, even in public. Thankfully I don't remember being smacked, or my siblings and I don't think it ever happened, I remember taps on the hand when we put our hands near the oven and things like that, but not actual harm but I do remember friends speaking about it. My Nan had a scar on her leg, her Dad often hit her with a belt, but she would never, ever say a bad word about him. Times change, people change, I'm against smacking but I also know it did happen years ago and it shouldn't have done.
