R to @ahistoryinart: My grandparents always did this. It was because the butter was always too cold (no central heating, no microwaves) and not spreadable without breaking the bread.
R to @hoskas: My grandmother (and lots of other Welsh women) buttered the loaf with it wedged under her bust, then SLICED it in situ so the butter was still facing upwards. Was absolutely terrifying / impressive.
