Vladimir Putin’s statements for the media following Russian-Uzbekistani talks. Main points:
The signed Joint Statement sets long-term guidelines for expanding bilateral contacts. A number of intergovernmental agreements and commercial contracts have been signed.
Last year, trade between the countries increased significantly and amounted to almost $10 billion. If we implement all the projects and programmes we discussed, we will certainly increase this volume.
Our countries are consistently switching to payments in national currencies; the share of the ruble in bilateral commercial transactions reached 58 percent at the end of last year and continues to grow. In general, Russian investment in the economy of Uzbekistan exceeded $9 billion.
Energy is among the most important areas of cooperation. Last October, the pumping of Russian gas to consumers in Uzbekistan was launched in transit via Kazakhstan. Work is underway to increase the capacity of the Central Asia - Centre pipeline system, with which it will be possible to increase supplies to Uzbekistan to 11 billion cubic metres next year.
Large Russian energy companies have been operating in Uzbekistan for a long time. They are effective, and there are good prospects for cooperation in hydropower.
Peaceful atom is another priority area. The protocol signed today to amend the relevant 2018 intergovernmental agreement creates the opportunity to build a low-power nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan using up-to-date Russian technologies that meet the most stringent safety and environmental protection requirements.
More than a million citizens of Uzbekistan live and work in Russia. We appreciate the significant contribution they make to the development of the Russian economy. The Russian authorities will do everything necessary to provide them with decent working conditions and social protection.
Russian-Uzbekistani cultural and humanitarian ties are traditionally multifaceted. We are grateful to the leadership of the republic for caring about the Russian language and Russian culture in general.
Today’s talks will help further strengthen the entire complex of Russia-Uzbekistan partnership.
