People used to call my friend "hc" when I was in middle school and it was offensive then (mid-90's). This "we don't know better" type attitude is bullshit. I can accept that there's the odd occasion that you don't know how offensive a word is or can be, but digging your heels in when told or pretending that you're still at a social awareness level of "rising damp" or "love thy neighbour" is bullshit.
