Was talking to a friend earlier this week who has been headhunted for a job and repeatedly (frustratingly!) chronically undervalues their skills, experience and labour. Thought I’d share the simple formula I gave them for negotiating their pay:

R to @BootstrapCook: 1. Know your worth.

2. Double it.

3. Add a third for them to knock down without losing anything.

4. Rinse and repeat.

R to @BootstrapCook: (I struggle to follow my own advice on this - still have a lot of stuff to unpack around money, guilt about earning anything, self esteem, fear of failure, scarcity mindset… - but have shared this with freelancers and friends many times over the years and it seems to be useful!)

R to @BootstrapCook: #1 is hard, but would suggest doing as much research as possible to find what people in similar positions/fields with your level of experience/skills/qualifications/etc earn - job ads, job search sites, and LinkedIn etc are handy for benchmarks. Factor in travel time/costs too.

R to @BootstrapCook: Have a lovely Friday, and I hope that’s helpful to someone. If it isn’t, it’s certainly been helpful for me to remind myself to treat myself with the same level of care and respect that I treat friends, peers, colleagues and others, so it was worth the lil brain dump anyway 🧠🤗

R to @candycariad: Make a list of your assets - qualifications, experience, personal qualities, specialist interests, expertise, successes, skills, everything. Make it really long, and ask trusted others for input. Then refer to it as often as you need to hype yourself up 💕

R to @kernowshark: Certainly in certain sectors, there’s a lot of ‘and what sort of salary are you looking for/what are your fees for this kind of work?’

Friends who hang around my kitchen at mealtimes often remark that it’s a real joy to watch me cook. One of them jokingly suggested I pop a phone in a corner, hit record, forget it’s there, and see myself as they see me. Finally did it today and god I have SUCH GOOD FRIENDS. 🤗

R to @BootstrapCook: Mostly because I now have some absolutely adorable footage of my very large dog literally bowling me to the floor and us rolling around on it playing, and it’s DELIGHTFUL. But yeah, if I ever needed any irrefutable proof that the hob is my happy place, I’ve got it in spades. 😌

R to @Kevin_Ashton: I’m not sure I’m ready to disappoint Twitter by revealing that I’m not actually always perpetually furious and am, in fact, apparently fing adorable. There’s no coming back from that level of intimacy, I fear 🤣

R to @flaminhaystacks: When I’m all moved bab, come for lunch and a seafront walk for ice creams en famille. Would be my absolute pleasure. 💕

R to @Kevin_Ashton: I will! It’s on my other phone and I’m being pinned to the couch by about 30kg of very excitable fur at the moment 😂
