Vladimir Putin and Ebrahim Raisi attended the signing of the intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in the construction of the Rasht-Astara railway section in Iran to boost transportation via the North-South international corridor
A 162-km section will be built between the cities of Rasht and Astara in Iran to ensure direct and uninterrupted railway transportation on the North-South route.
The unique North-South artery will diversify global transportation routes, including for the delivery of foods to consumers in Iran, the Persian Gulf and Africa, which will strengthen the global food security. Transit time from St Petersburg to Mumbai will be reduced from 35-40 days to about 10 days.
The corridor is being built in close cooperation with Azerbaijan. The sides expressed the hope that the drafting of an agreement on cooperation in the development of the North-South railway infrastructure would be completed without delay.
